These tumours are gliomas that infiltrate the pons, the most important part of the brain. Due to their location and infiltrative
nature they cannot be resected surgically. Biopsy is in general relatively safe but is performed only for research purposes. The
standard treatment is radiation therapy, but unfortunately this can at best provide only some improvement of the symptoms, and that
lasts typically for just a few months. Currently, several other drugs are being investigated and offered in order to overcome the
extremely poor prognosis.
